Dipped back into the archives and pulled this image from a visit to New York City in October of 2008. My wife and I were on the ferry heading to Liberty Island and all of a sudden every person up on the top deck pulled out a point ‘n shoot digital camera and started firing away as we neared the Statue of Liberty. This has to be one of my favorite travel pictures and another perfect illustration of “everyday surrealism”. And for the record I myself was using a point ‘n shoot instead of a megabuck pro camera.

I have been busy working on another (pro bono, non-paying) job, so have not had much time to spend on personal photography projects, so I am presenting another image from the sunrise session last Saturday morning while I was up at our cabin in Wisconsin. This image was taken early in the sequence just before the sun crested the horizon. I love the red and yellow and what the early sunlight is doing to the low clouds. Not a lot of post-processing on this one, mostly some small amount of intensification of the colors and some sharpening applied. As I am looking over the series of images I have captured with this sunrise, I think I may turn it into a book similar to “The Clearwater Sunset” book I did earlier this summer.

While I normally do not follow one post so quickly with another, I just had to post this image taken early this morning while out photographing the sunrise over the lake. It perfectly illustrates something I remember from an article on Jay Maisel from back in the 70’s. When you’re photographing sunrises and sunsets, turn around away from the sun and you’ll often be surprised. This image was taken with my Olympus EM-5 then converted to B&W in Aperture. I think I’ll call it “Daddy Long Legs”…

We arrived at the cabin last night, and while I was not planning on getting up before the sun, I was awake so I got in the jeep to head over to the west side of the lake to see if I could capture the sunrise. I was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise of the lake. It was so quiet, the only sounds were the loons calling and the soft purr of my Olympus EM-5. Not even a single fisherman was out on the lake yet. This image is literally “hot off the sensor” and barely 30 minutes old.
